The Unexpected Joy of Not Knowing

Around the Bend

As we journey along the path of life and faith, there are times when we come to a crossroads and face a decision. Do we choose the familiar, the safe, the known? Or do we take a leap of faith into the unknown, trusting that the path will unfold before us as we walk?

What is there about the unknown that makes us uncomfortable? Maybe it’s the uncertainty of not knowing. We are often afraid of the unknown. Who knows what lies around the next bend on the path?

Medieval mapmakers used the phrase “Here Be Dragons” to mark the uncharted and unknown territories on their maps. We, too, come to points in our lives where the path ahead is unclear and uncertain.

Instead of fearing the dragons that may lie beyond our known world, the challenge is approaching these moments with creativity, courage, and faith. Just as the mapmakers saw the uncharted territories as opportunities for discovery and adventure, so too can we see the unknown as a chance to grow and learn.

It is tempting to try and plan every step of our journey, to have a clear map of where we’re going and how we will get there. But the truth is, life rarely goes according to plan. Peter Enns called this the uh-oh moments that threaten familiar patterns of believing and thinking.

And that’s where the unexpected joy of not knowing comes in.

When we let go of our need for certainty and control, we open ourselves up to the possibility of unexpected adventures. We allow room for God to work in ways we could never have imagined. We embrace the mystery and wonder of the journey, knowing that we are not alone.

Of course, stepping into the unknown can be scary. It can feel like we’re walking blindfolded, unsure of what lies ahead. But that’s where faith comes in. Faith is not about having all the answers or knowing the outcome. Faith is a leap, according to Soren Kierkegaard. It’s about trusting that God is with us every step of the way, leading us forward.

So, the next time you come to a crossroads on your journey, remember the joy of not knowing. Embrace the uncertainty and step out in faith, knowing that the adventure that awaits is more than worth the risk.

And hey, if all else fails, you’ll have a good story to tell! Remember, faith doesn’t have to be all solemn or success. Sometimes, a healthy dose of humor and humility can go a long way in navigating the twists and turns of life.

So, fellow travelers here’s to embracing the joy of not knowing and trusting in the beauty of the journey. May your path be filled with unexpected adventures and divine surprises. And remember, as the saying goes, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” So, let go of the need for certainty and control and let the adventure unfold. Happy walking, friends!
